oakley jawbone MOBILE, Alabama-- What began five minutes late could have ended five minutes earlier. The Crewe of Columbus rolled through downtown Mobile in crisp 55 degree weather with just shy of 90,000 people estimated in attendance. Floats were themed with elements like the Olympics, the Super Bowl and zip-lining. Right before the parade, cars kept trying to get through closed gates, creating gridlock and dangerous crowd situations that police quickly diffused by turning away the cars. The best float was the Pinta float, which was generous and seemed to have a system for throwing down, unlike most of the other floats in the parade. Many were left saying "come on" after floats passed after not getting anything. Near the beginning of the parade, several people dressed in formal attire jumped over several people including children for beads. A young woman had throws snatched out of her hands. The good Samaritan moment was definitely the police officer that has been manning the intersection closest to the Civic Center lot who managed the traffic and let as many cars by as he could before closing the gate. He communicated his intentions and warned pedestrians to ensure safety. He made sure a little girl got a sword thrown to her, which he certainly didn't have to do. The moment that left the crowd stunned was when one float passed by with more than one reveler texting instead of throwing. "Get off the phone," screamed one of the drunk ball-goers. Overheard: "Why doesn't the t shirt cart sell Bud Light?" Stingy: All of the floats except Pinta. Best float: You guessed it. Pinta. Fashion forward: A woman with glow sticks in her dread locks. You go girl. The "really!?" moment: A woman pushed a stroller with a baby inside past a cracked gate right in front of multiple police motorcycles. Common sense is not so common. Luckily, the same nice police officer mentioned earlier managing traffic stopped her. Best band: University of West Alabama played "Sail" by AWOL Nation and it was amazing.Perhaps other areas of the parade were better, but as soon as the end of the parade came near a chorus of "that was it?" rang out. Past parades this season were far better, but there's much more Mardi Gras in store this season!1 adult forPublic Intoxication 1 juvenile forMinor in Possession of Alcohol6 tickets were written forcrossing a crowd restraint device (barricade).1 adult forcontributing to the delinquency of a minor4 adults forMinor in Possession of Alcohol.
